Acupuncture Physicians practice Chinese Medicine(CM).  There are two main schools of thought in CM; traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and 5 element theory (5E).  Most physicians practice tcm but incorporate 5e theories into their practice.  5e theory supposes that each person can be classified using the theory and one or two of the elements typically dominate.  Their body structure, tendencies, temperaments, emotions, positive and negative behavior, moods and illnesses can all be looked at in relation to the 5 elements.  The 5 elements are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

Wood personality people have clear visions and goals, they are the planners; the pioneer or warrior.  When out of balance they can either be indecisive or have a desire for power.  The organ system affected is the liver; your physical functioning liver and the energetics of it assigned by cm.  Around the ribcage and eyes will be most affected on these people.  The Liver meridian is the one most affected by any kind of stress or irritability; most people have a slight liver imbalance.  Signs of liver imbalance include migraines, eye problems, clotting/painful menstruation, pain around the ribs, herpes zoster, vision issues/night blindness, endometriosis.  Eating sour/bitter foods such as kimchi or mung beans can help restore balance.

Fire personalities are . . . fiery; they’re the wizard or comedian!!  When out of balance they are either too excitable, nervous, stuttering, or lackluster in their personality, anxiety ridden and awkward in social situations.  The organ affected is the heart; not just the physical heart but the energetics of the heart such as heartbreak.  High blood pressure, heart attacks, insomnia, palpitations, and anxiety are all symptoms of heart imbalance.  They are most vulnerable in hot weather and do better with mild climates.  Eating bitter foods like dark leafy greens, dandelion root, okra can help restore balance.

Earth personalities are loving, nurturing, giving; like mother earth; the preschool teacher or camp counselor.  When out of balance they tend to be worriers, meddler, and martyrs.  They tend to have weak digestive systems and gain weight easily.  Health issues are fatigue, diarrhea, food allergies, heartburn; women are especially vulnerable to earth imbalance.  They crave sweets therefore eliminating artificial sweets from their diet is best and sticking to natural sweets.  They also do better eating cooked foods rather than raw such as millet, pumpkin, squash, and parsnip. Meditating helps rebalance.

Metal personalities are organized, self-disciplined, and conscientious; they’re the queen or alchemist.  They may be overcritical and have trouble letting go.  Many are vulnerable to this imbalance especially since it’s most affected by grief.  They are prone to allergies, asthma, eczema, constipation, frequent colds, and bowel disease.  Metal personalities feel best in the fall weather when they can accomplish anything.  Rice, soy beans, mustard greens, and radish help balance metal.

Water personalities tend to be emotional; the artist or philosopher..  They can either be fearlessly determined being able to focus on their goals in the face of many hardships or retreat into their cocoon forever.  They are susceptible to fertility issues, erectile dysfunction, low libido.  The energetics of the kidneys oversee everything that we think of as aging.  Therefore, hearing loss, low back/knee pain, hair loss, greying hair, and menopause, urinary frequency or incontinence, and feeling cold.  Kidney personalities will crave salty foods and tend to reach for pretzels or potato chips; try reaching for seaweed instead.

Keep in mind that imbalance will shift as life shifts.  However, with the above mentioned in mind try and figure out which personality type you are and bring the answer to your Acupuncture Physician; there are two of us in Kodawaris South Tampa yoga studio. This will help them assess, diagnose, and treat you.
